Mikao Usui
Mikao Usui
[edit | edit source]
Mikao Usui (1865–1926) was a Japanese spiritual teacher, healer, and the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing. His teachings blend ancient wisdom, energy work, and meditative practices to awaken the body’s natural ability to heal, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Usui is considered the originator of what is today known as Usui Reiki Ryoho, or the "Usui Method of Healing with Spiritual Energy."
Early Life and Spiritual Quest
[edit | edit source]Mikao Usui was born on August 15, 1865, in the village of Taniai, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. From a young age, he was drawn to spiritual study, martial arts, and esoteric knowledge. He explored:
- Tendai Buddhism
- Shinto practices
- Shugendō (mountain asceticism)
- Taoist and Confucian philosophies
- Western teachings, including medicine and theology
Driven by a deep inner calling, he spent many years searching for a method of spiritual healing that could awaken the universal life force within.
The Revelation on Mount Kurama
[edit | edit source]In 1922, at the age of 57, Usui undertook a 21-day meditation and fasting retreat on Mount Kurama, a sacred site near Kyoto. On the final day, he experienced a profound spiritual awakening, a moment of energetic illumination that awakened his healing ability.
This moment is often referred to as his "Reiki Attunement" from the universe.
After this event, Usui began healing others with his hands, without using tools or physical medicine. He understood that he had received a gift not only to heal, but to teach others how to access this universal energy.
The Usui Reiki System
[edit | edit source]Mikao Usui’s system, known as Usui Reiki Ryoho, is a holistic practice that involves channeling universal life energy (Rei-Ki) through the hands, mind, and heart. The purpose is not only physical healing but also spiritual development and balance.
Key elements of his method include:
- Reiju (Attunements) – Energetic initiations that open the student's connection to Reiki energy
- Hand Positions – Specific placements for healing the body's energy field
- Chakra Awareness – Although not originally named as such, energy centers similar to chakras are activated during practice
- The Five Reiki Principles – Ethical and spiritual guidelines for daily living
The Five Reiki Precepts
[edit | edit source]Usui developed five guiding principles, often recited as part of daily practice:
Just for today...
- Do not anger
- Do not worry
- Be grateful
- Work diligently
- Be kind to others
These principles encourage inner peace and personal responsibility, forming the spiritual foundation of Reiki practice.
Reiki Lineage and Legacy
[edit | edit source]Usui went on to teach and attune over 2,000 students during his life. He created a structured yet flexible method, which allowed the practice to spread rapidly. Among his direct students was Chujiro Hayashi, who played a key role in spreading Reiki beyond Japan.
Today, Reiki is practiced globally in various forms, often integrated into:
- Holistic Healing
- Energy Work
- Chakra Balancing
- Spiritual Growth
- Meditation and Mindfulness
- Hospitals and wellness centers
Philosophy and Spiritual View
[edit | edit source]Mikao Usui saw Reiki not just as healing, but as a path to enlightenment. The practice helps remove blockages in the energy field, balances the spirit, and guides one toward harmony with the universe.
He emphasized simplicity, daily practice, and inner devotion rather than dogma or rigid ritual. For Usui, healing was a doorway to awakening.
Final Years and Death
[edit | edit source]Usui continued to teach and treat people throughout Japan until his death in 1926. His grave and memorial stone can be found at the Saihōji Temple in Tokyo. The memorial includes a detailed account of his life and teachings.
Influence and Modern Forms
[edit | edit source]Usui Reiki has since evolved into many branches:
- Usui Shiki Ryoho
- Western Reiki (Hawayo Takata lineage)
- Reiki Tummo
- Karuna Reiki
- Jikiden Reiki (closer to original Japanese practices)
Despite variations, all forms trace their spiritual origin to Mikao Usui’s awakening and teachings.
Quotes
[edit | edit source]"The secret art of inviting happiness. The miraculous medicine of all diseases."
"Reiki is the art of letting go, the art of being. It flows when you are present."
