Reiki is a gentle, yet powerful energy healing modality that originated in Japan and has since become one of the most widely practiced holistic therapies in the world. It involves the channeling of universal life force energy through the hands of a practitioner to support healing, relaxation, and emotional balance.

Reiki is not tied to any religion or belief system and can be practiced by anyone open to working with energy and intention.

Origins and Meaning

The word "Reiki" is composed of two Japanese kanji:

  • Rei – "Universal" or "Spiritual Wisdom"
  • Ki – "Life Force Energy"

Together, Reiki means "spiritually guided life force energy." This concept aligns with ancient understandings of life energy found in many cultures (e.g., Qi in Chinese medicine, Prana in yogic philosophy).

Founder: Mikao Usui

Mikao Usui, a Japanese spiritual seeker and teacher, developed the system of Reiki in the early 20th century after a profound meditative experience on Mount Kurama. Usui's method was a synthesis of meditation, energy work, and spiritual teachings focused on healing the whole person—body, mind, and spirit.

He emphasized self-healing, spiritual growth, and daily ethical practice through the Reiki Precepts:

```Just for today: Do not anger. Do not worry. Be grateful. Work honestly. Be kind to all living things.```

How Reiki Works

Reiki operates through the concept that energy flows through all living beings. When this energy is balanced and flowing freely, we experience well-being. When it is blocked or low, physical or emotional imbalances may arise.

  • The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the recipient’s body.
  • Energy flows where it is most needed.

  • Prepares the student to teach and initiate others into Reiki.

Training is passed from teacher to student through direct transmission and energetic attunements.

Reiki Symbols

Reiki uses sacred symbols to focus and direct energy:

  • Cho Ku Rei – Power Symbol
  • Sei He Ki – Emotional/Mental Symbol
  • Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen – Distance Healing Symbol
  • Dai Ko Myo – Master Symbol

These symbols are traditionally kept sacred and are taught during appropriate levels of Reiki training. They are not believed to have power on their own but act as keys to open energetic channels and higher consciousness.
