Peter J. Carroll

Peter James Carroll (born 1953) is a British occultist, writer, and one of the principal founders of the modern movement known as Chaos Magic. He is best known as the co-founder of the Illuminates of Thanateros (IOT) and as the author of two highly influential works: Liber Null and Psychonaut.

He played a major role in the evolution of modern magical thought, shifting the focus from traditional ceremonial practices to more pragmatic, results-driven methods. Carroll’s work emphasizes flexibility, belief as a tool, and psychological techniques for personal and magical transformation.

Early Life & Background

Peter J. Carroll studied science at university and later became a physics teacher. His scientific background heavily influenced his approach to magic, where he applied concepts from quantum theory, psychology, and probability into magical theory and practice.

In the late 1970s, he began developing what would become known as Chaos Magic, a system free from dogma, encouraging experimentation, and heavily reliant on the practitioner’s personal belief system.

Chaos Magic and the IOT

Carroll is widely regarded as one of the founders of Chaos Magic, alongside figures like Ray Sherwin. Together, they formed the Illuminates of Thanateros (IOT), a magical order devoted to the practice and evolution of Chaos Magic. The IOT combined aspects of Western occultism with novel concepts drawn from psychology, quantum theory, and postmodern thought.

Works

Liber Null & Psychonaut

Originally published separately and later combined, these two texts form the core foundation of Chaos Magic.

  • Liber Null – Outlines the structure of magical training, basic theory, and practical techniques.
  • Psychonaut – Explores consciousness, ritual, and gnosis, expanding into experimental areas like the use of chaos, belief shifting, and alternate states of awareness.

Other Notable Works

  • Liber Kaos (1992) – A deeper and more refined manual for advanced Chaos Magicians.
  • Epoch (co-authored) – Combines historical and philosophical commentary with ritual practice.
  • Apophenion – A metaphysical exploration into consciousness and how magical systems arise.

Legacy

Peter J. Carroll is considered one of the most innovative minds in the occult world of the 20th and 21st centuries. His contributions redefined the magician as a psycho-spiritual hacker, someone capable of manipulating reality through flexible belief systems and altered states.

His writings continue to inspire both solitary practitioners and magical groups worldwide.
